Wow, earlier this week I woke to a dusting of snow! It was beautiful in the sunshine but deep down I was wincing because I’m not yet ready for winter. (Hmmm……all of a sudden, I was wondering where my winter coat is stored.) Winter has a way of doing that- it pops up suddenly, gets you scrambling and of course, Christmas comes to mind.
In this post, I want to tell you about Red Wing’s charming holiday event held on Friday, November 29th, that rivals any quaint Christmas town in a Hallmark movie. The Downtown Holiday Stroll and newly added Who’s Who of the West End District offers a celebration of yuletide festivities to usher in the Christmas season.
Come and join in the cookie decorating at our beloved Hanisch Bakery, snuggle together while on a horse drawn wagon ride, be wowed by the fire dancers and wax nostalgia while viewing the vintage snowmobile display.
Tour the Historic St. James Hotel, get a bite to eat at Jimmy’s Pub or the elegant Port restaurant. Hear the christmas carolers, see the train display and participate in the Festival of Wreaths.
After you are warm and toasty, step back outside and dance to the live music, visit the quaint shops, view the live nativity, the tree lighting ceremony, the light parade and the holiday fireworks!
The Candlelight Inn’s warm glow will beckon you when it’s time to retire for the evening and settle in “for a long winter’s nap”.
October is our busiest time at the Candlelight Inn Bed and Breakfast. People travel to Red Wing, Mn to view the beautiful colors on the forested bluffs and to drive the Great River Road around the exquisitely blue Lake Pepin.
Because we love having guests in our home, we take great care in preparing for your stay at the Inn. However, every once in awhile, Dave and I take a break from polishing the silver and venture out into town for a a bit of nourishment and play. Also, we enjoy recommending to you the places we are fond of in our picturesque river town.
Mandy’s Coffee and Cafe was the perfect place for an afternoon cuppa and respite. Its cozy interior felt so good on a gray and blustery day. I sipped on a flavorful chia latte- Christmas in a cup- while Dave savored his robust black coffee. Because we are trying to slim down a bit, we shared a warm cardamon roll – next time, I’m claiming a whole one for myself!
Watch for my upcoming post on our dearly loved Hanisch Bakery- oh my goodness- so good! (The “slimming down” is proving to be a little difficult for me…..)
Come and visit Red Wing, “the best weekend getaway town” in MN. We have the perfect room for your stay while you discover the gems of Red Wing. Check out our FB page for our Christmas gift certificate special. We hope to see you soon!
Pure enjoyment! Since moving to Red Wing last July, David and I are having a wonderful time experiencing the delights of the Mississippi River Valley area.
While recently out exploring the beauty that sits across the river from Red Wing, we popped in to eat dinner at a gem of restaurant, the Chef Shack, in Bay City, WI.
We had heard the local buzz, with reference to the chef prepared seasonal food with a french flair along with the awards and accolades belonging to the talented chefs, so we were anticipating greatness. We were not disappointed; the experience was extraordinary!
Crossing over the threshold we were charmed with the Chef Shack’s warm and hospitable vibe. The interior decor was pleasing to the eye- a combination of rustic and industrial accents. Comfortable seats were available at the bar and the relaxing atmosphere added to our enjoyment. We learned that having a reservation is preferable if a table in the dining area is desired.
After being seated we were served a complimentary rhubarb spritzer – beautiful color and delicious!
The appetizer platter and main course was a rich symphony of flavor and the dessert of Baked Alaska was a perfect finale to our dining experience. So good, so good!
As I write this blog, I find myself mentally planning another visit to the Chef Shack. It truly is a lovely dining experience; you will not be disappointed! Bon appetit!
We look forward to your visit at The Candlelight Inn!
“…the good ‘ol American front porch seems to stand for positivity and openness; a platform from which to welcome or wave farewell; a place where things of significance could happen.” Dan Stevens
The long awaited season of front porch living is under way! The white wicker furniture is set in place and the cushions are fluffed and plumped. White lights hang overhead to lend a warm glow to the cool evenings.
The days when I can take the time to linger on the front porch with a beverage and a book is a luxury. I settle myself in the wicker rocking chair, close my eyes, inhale the smell of spring and listen to the relaxing sounds of Red Wing.
The majestic magnolia tree that is rooted near the porch has produced an abundance of white flowers this season; the porch is the ideal place for breathing in the sweet fragrance of the many blossoms.
While relaxing on the porch, the sound of church bells and train whistles create a charming sense of nostalgia of a simpler time in this historic rivertown.
Come join us at the Candlelight Inn in Red Wing, MN. Pour yourself a glass of wine, make yourself comfortable with a book or magazine. Grab a game and snack from the library and enjoy our front porch. We look forward to your stay!
